Achy Breaky Arch

Oh, achy breaky arch. There is something so romantic about Romanesque architecture. The abundant amount of curvature - the arched doorways, the vaulted ceilings, the semi-circular windows - all encompassing a Cathedral-like radiance that feels holy.

Romanesque architecture preceded gothic architecture in the mid-11th century. It was a byproduct of the growth in population, which required larger chapels for the influx of populations. So, they began to build large, airy churches with massive piers and walls, and vaults to support the load of the structure.

There are numerous different types of arches. They depend on the shape, number of centre’s, workmanship, and materials of construction. Below are the most commonly used types of arches.

Arches have become a popular design feature once again, and I, like many people, am a HUGE fan. I am particularly fond of semi-circular and semi-elliptical arched openings. There is something about them that is so mystical and pleasing to my eye. So keep em’ coming! & we’ll keep designing them.
